So the NHS was formed in 1948 when the population of the UK was about 48m. Today its 65m and growing. The number of people using it are accelerating beyond what the government can easily collect in tax without adversley affecting the economy (sure you'll disagree, but thats another argument). The basic idea (and i've not actually read the tory manifesto yet) is that people should pay more than they currently do at point of use - it seems (as i said i've not read the manifesto) theres an option to pay into an insurance scheme which pays the point of use which eventually is taken from your overall wealth/estate. The devil will be in the detail of capping it at a level where the less well off get it all for free and the wealthier pay more. Which they already do in tax. It seems mechanism in which people should be able to afford to pay more towards their healthcare.
Also, Fundamentally if you tax corporations too much you encourage them to move elsewhere (Dyson being a good example) which means job losses putting a strain on welfare and no tax being paid into this country by the company. Tax avoidance of course is another subject.
