Thing is, sovereignty is often illusory in any event

We think we have control over all kinds of things that the global economic environment means we really can't control.

On the flip side, having started from a very pro-Europe position politically and then worked in Brussels for some time, the way the institutions work is really hard to defend with a straight face. The waste of money is colossal and in a time of austerity Something Really Should Be Done (case in point: shifting the entire EP to Strasbourg for one day a week, completely f**king pointless and hugely f**king expensive).

The problem is politics gets in the way: with 27 member states, each needs to feel it has commensurate influence on Things That Matter, and the bureaucracy has to be seen to be believed.
