But one would interfere with the freedoms on social and economic activity and jeopardise the requirements of normalisation. It's not inevitable that an Eire/UK hard border would need heightened security apparatus around it, but do you think we are going to get away with not protecting customs officials from possible harassment and attacks? It's a very slippery slope to a highly policed or even militarised border.

It's not prohibited, but it's incompatible in practice.
