Recent: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell. Classic: Brave New World by Huxley

Other good shouts anything by Orwell (his autobiographical pieces are also very interesting), Lord of the Flies by Golding, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and of course the obvious one everybody is avoiding - Lord of the Rings by Tolkien.

But I suppose that's more than one.
