Investing - advice / comments welcome

I recently opened a stocks & shares ISA with my bank and invested in one of their own funds (of the low/mid/high risk options I went for the latter), this for the reason that I thought I don't really know anything about investing so thought I'd leave my investment in safer hands. However, this has only served to whet my appetite and I'm now looking at more hands-on investing (albeit with only a nominal amount to begin with incase I'm rubbish and lose it all).

If anyone has any experience themselves of investing, I'd be immensely grateful for any insight etc that might be offered (at layperson / beginner level). I'm finding shares most appealing at present, simply because they seem to be more suited to a hands-on approach rather than simply investing and then leaving - if anyone has any pointers specifically in relation to indexes etc then this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
