Peter Grant?

Sammy Lee? Stuart Pearce? Tony Cottee? Carlton Palmer? Tony Adams? Chris Waddle? John Barnes?

In no other industry does someone get chucked straight into the top job simply because they excelled at a totally different job, ie. playing. Far and away the best route to success is by working your way up: something Fergie, Mourinho, Wenger and Benitez have all done, for example. Of course, occasionally someone gets it right - Keane at Sunderland, as you say - but even there, his sheer force of personality made him an exceptional case, and he had loads of money available; which Dublin certainly wouldn't here.

Keep Dion on as player-coach, maybe groom him for the manager's job (if he wants it) at a later point - but appoint a complete novice when we have no money and are in more danger of relegation to the third flight than at any time since 1960? Bonkers.
