He’s correct to a point. Getting into good areas is much better than shots on target

A shot on target is less likely to score if that shot is from a tight angle out wide for instance. You are more likely to score if you cross it in to a good area in the box. Same principle in what I coach at hockey. We have points for different areas of the scoring D. 5 points if you shoot from close in, 1,2,3 for other zones. It trains the players to get in the right areas as in hockey 67% of goals come from our “5 zone”.
