He would be there with a different group of players, with a different budget, club philosophy, resources etc, and with two years of premier league and a year of Bundesliga experience under his belt. And that goes for much of his coaching staff too.

I also agree that sacking him was disastrous but that’s more to do with us not only choosing the wrong manager to replace him but also accepting a completely different playing style.

We got relegated twice for more reasons than only the manager. The players weren’t good enough and with little experience at that level, we had no money first time around and then wasted 60m the second time on players who were also not PL ready when they arrived. We also don’t know why it was that we came out of lockdown so much worse than the other PL teams and that was a big part of kicking off the decline even though we did bounce back the following season.

The year he got sacked was also unfortunate with covid hitting the preseason preparations and some injuries on top of that. And let’s not forget selling our most creative player and the next most creative deciding to behave like a teenager.

It’s really not only the manager that dictates success or failure after being promoted.
