Ignoring your usual tedious dig what part of what i have said does not show
common sense?
I've not come down on any side of the fence here just saying that I think the aspiration of a full (or at least fuller) service NHS 7 days a week is a good one and that there ought to be a means of making it happen whilst ensuring that those who work for it are treated fairly. That may of course include extra staff to share the workload but that is a slightly different (although not completely unconnected because it seems to me that the commendable attitude of the doctors is that they don;t just leave at the end of their shifts if there is nobody to come in and fill the gaps) point to whether the contract on offer to existing staff is reasonable. If, for example, the government was making this offer alongside a pledge to recruit x number of further doctors would it then be acceptable?
Perhaps some departments would not need as many staff at all times during the week if they were operating at weekends as well (not emergency ones obviously). I understand some NHS departments have moved to this way of operating and it can work quite well but it probably depends on your overall level of resource and the circumstances of the department in question.
