and of course it goes deeper and wider

Take Bristol.

Clifton, Easton, Southmead, St Pauls. Names that will conjour up a particular stereotype of the person likely to live there.

I can tell you where a Somali family is most likely to live, where a Trustafarian is likely to live, where a white professional is likely to live, where a white non-working family is likely to live, where a poor black family is likely to be living, where a traditionalist Muslim family is likely to be living.

Based on all that I can tell you where the best schools are likely to be, where the most investment is likely to be made, where the highest crime rates are likely to be.

You wouldn't design any city along those lines, it's unhealthy. And yet that's what we've allowed to develop through poorly thought out policies, vested interests and inertia.

It's not healthy for a disenfranchised Muslim lad to grow up in a 'ghetto' (horrid word, you know what I mean though). Just as it' not healthy for a disenfranchised jobless white lad to grow up in the equivalent ghetto and only getting his awareness of Muslim/immigrant communities from the media.

There is a reason why islamic fundamentalists and BNP like parties recruit from the communities they do.
