You see i would take completely the opposite approach to that

I would resent it if you put my taxes up. I already feel i pay more than my fair share in terms of what i take out of the system.

Surely if someone needs benefits but doesn't bother applying for them then they only have themselves to blame and need to take responsibility for themselves.

I appreciate there would be an initial costs involved with means testing more things and no system is perfect so there would be some cases of unfairness (but resolvable if you have a decent appeal system) but surely they could save millions just in terms of the child benefit (or more accurately sorting out the currently useless means testing approach which still sees lots of families getting child benefit despite having income in excess of ?50k a year), the winter fuel allowance and i'm sure certain other benefits.
