Serious question re these benefit cuts/disability allowance etc
I ask this hoping that this won't just deteriorate into a "because the Tories are evil" thread. Regardless of your political persuasion i don;t believe that any mainstream politicians deliberately set out to make a section of society suffer. However can someone clarify for me precisely what the disability allowance reforms are that are causing such anger at present.
I am struggling personally to see why Cameron has not just taken aide the relevant ministers/civil servants and said "sort this out" as it appears to be a major PR own goal but it does not seem to me to me that it ought to be very difficult to ensure that people who are genuinely disabled or genuinely ill continue to receive support. The implication from the press stories/media appears to suggest that is not the case so interested to understand why that is?
Is it because they are convinced there are numerous people receiving disability benefit who don;t need it but in clamping down are catching a few genuine claimants in the net?
Personally, i think that far more stuff should be means tested. I get child benefit but could manage without it. my parents get a winter fuel allowance and don't need it. There must be millions more like us out there and I think if the Government is not touching such benefits because they think it will lose them votes then I'm not sure they are right. I think most people would accept losing such benefits on the basis of means testing provided that its coupled with much tougher restrictions on welfare for those who can but don;t work so the load is being shared fairly.
