I've simply cottoned on to the grim reality that in my bit of the legal industry it is far easier to get promoted and to progress by moving firms/jobs. Firms seem to expect skillsets/experience for promotions that they simply don't create/foster in their juniors. eg the place I'm leaving has just appointed 2 external heads of dept because 'to do the job you need to have already been doing it'. what a great message to the 6 internals that went for those roles....
I'm with you on the importance & value of flexible employers. I'll be making it my mission to ensure none of my new team will be forced to move like I did just to get a sensible work/life situation.
