In that case, it was probably as much pure fluke as anything else.
Anyway, you did know what direction it was supposed to go. Not first time, but then you didn't need to for the experiment to suceed first time - it just needed to spin. But the second time you knew that it needed to go in the opposite direction, and then back to the first direction the third time.
But, it could have simply been fluke.
