Well then, that might well be what's called ideomotor control.

It's the same thing that charlatan pendulum swingers exploit (the sort of people that tell you that if the pendulum swings clockwise your unborn baby will be a girl, but anti-clockwise a boy).

All you need is the concsious desire for a particular thing to happen (direction of swing of the pendulum, or in this case, direction of swirl of the water) and subconsciously your brain will make tiny muscle adjustment for that to happen.
