You're entirely right

It's one of the few jobs where you're appointed not on your competence to actually do anything but by your ability to campaign effectively.

It's also a job that completely destroys whatever private life you think you have.

Even reasonable, motivated people who go into it for the right reasons are often turned by the system into horrible people.

The nature of the process means those who succeed generally have, erm, quite well developed egos. Confidence exceeding competence is a given.

There are exceptions on all sides of the House, but decreasingly many.
