Does the maths actually add up, though?

If private schools are charging VAT, presumably they're also going to be able to recover VAT on their costs (which they couldn't previously). No idea what their cost base looks like and how much is subject to VAT, but it means it's already less than 20% on fees that is being generated.

Then that's reduced for every kid that would have gone, but now won't.

And then there's the possibility that a few private schools go to the wall. One went in this area last year, it's not as if all private schools are sloshing in cash. It might only take a reduction by 3 or 4 kids per intake to f**k plenty of the smaller ones.

I don't have a problem with the policy, just not sure the maths will add up to a windfall.
