I live within my means

And haven't take all the deductions /claims I can/could.

The sums aren't enough for me to employ someone else to do it and the time it would take for me to do it myself isn't worth the money I would receive for doing so.

Working for the civil service I also need to be aware not only of conflicts of interest, but we're also meant to be careful to avoid any perceived conflicts of interest. (which I do take seriously).

This means there is stuff my kid would like to do, but can't.

I cannot, for example, display any political affiliation /signs on the house, even if Canary Jr wanted to, just for themselves (they vote for the first time in May).

On your final point you can follow the law but it can still be perceived by society that you have done something wrong ethically (by societies standards).

Cf. Companies who made money hand over fist in lockdown and still claimed handouts, because they could.

The unwritten rules, as ever, for those in the public eye are different again. In the UK unlike for example in Italy, its not widely seen as a good thing to use the rules to profit when your fans or the wider public can't or don't.
