at what point should society take over our lives?

If we think that a gambler should be stopped from placing a bet, should an alcoholic be banned from buying booze?
Should an obese person be stopped from buying a cake or chocolate?
Should a convicted drink-driver lose their licence for ever?
Should an adulterer be prevented from marrying?
Should someone with £5,000 of existing debt have their passport taken away so that they don't take an expensive holiday?
