what makes this such a dangerous time.
All the notorious dictators of the Thirties gained power at times of great financial hardship when mainly decent people desperate for change were vulnerable to promises of a different looking world.
Both the big votes this year have seen victories for campaigns employing openly racist elements, thanks to the support of people with such genuine economic concerns that they were prepared to overlook the racism lurking within.
The sharp rise in attacks on immigrants after the Brexit vote has surely been because the racists feel legitimised (a campaign incorporating racist elements won a national vote). History says it doesn't require a majority of people to actually be racists to facilitate the rise of racists and demagogues.
