main hope is actually his vanity

he seems to desperately care about winning and being admired. He had to say all that grim stuff to get the Republican nomination because so many of them are whacko, but to go down in history as a good and admired president that stuff won't remotely do the job. I don't think he's particularly ideological (he only really seems to care about himself) so he might just be open to a fairly wide range of courses of action...
