I like the guardian but I disagree with a lot in that article.

He is clearly not a big sports fan and was cross that the news got delayed. I think this swapping channels bit is irritating but it's not the end of the world and it only happens once every four years so I can live with it.

I think there's a difference between state funding and the lottery. I'm happy that we have a pocket of money outside of our taxes that can go towards sport and culture as well as good causes and we shouldn't feel guilty about that.

I also couldn't disagree more with the Daily Mail headline. How dare Brexiters claim this success as theirs? In the old days you could maybe argue that there were individual geniuses who achieved despite the system but our success since Atlanta surely shows the value of an effective state collaboration. (I'm sure I read an article in the Guardian article recently that said rail companies should copy the model). I love the fact that Callum Skinner has asked brexit not to use his image any more in their tweets).

What makes you think athletes have to be seen singing the national anthem on the podium? I haven't come across that feeling (it would be really tricky with the anthem they're playing I would think!) I did hear a terrible story about an American gymnast who was criticised for not putting her hand on the chest during their anthem. It's their medal as far as I'm concerned. Let them celebrate it how they like I say - whistling, black power salute... I definitely wouldn't sing!
