Whet does possession mean?

Don't understand why people look at possession so much. It matters what u do when u don't have the ball as much as when u do. We had to play like that today to get a result. If we played too open and free flowing, arsenal would have exploited that.

In my view, our approach was spot on, considering the opposing talent.
