I think I have a better chance with a theologian, they tend to be nice.
The best book on the origins of Christianity is (seriously) the gospel of Mark. Followed by the other three (or just John if you're short of time). Until you've read those you haven't got a snowball's.
I would really recommend to you a book called Cafe Theology by Michael Lloyd, Otto. You have the intellectual wattage to cope with it and it is absolutely brilliant stuff from one of the best living theologians. It's also very witty.
