"Failed in the Premiership": WTF? Actually, he did really well - and no less a figure than Mourinho considered him one of the best managers in the league. He didn't keep Fulham comfortably afloat for three and-a-half years with nothing; equally though, it's very, very difficult to keep a club with such a limited fanbase and small ground up, especially given al Fayed pulled back from spending extravagant amounts post-Tigana.

He's a tough, feisty character, who believes in passing football with a combative edge - and at times (notably before Saha was sold in Jan '04, and throughout 04/5 at home) they played some really good stuff. Also, he's a decent enough bloke to 'fit' the image of the club: indeed, it might possibly be attractive to him simply because he's used to managing a side whose fans are patient and don't have daft expectation levels.
