Grammar schools have changed since I went to

Downham Grammar School. They have become the preserve of middle class parents who can afford the inflated property prices to move into the catchment areas. They can then avail their kids of the better standard of teaching, which will eventually mean better University places.
A small point which helps to prove this - 3% og grammar school kids get free school meals, nationally the figure is 11%.
Back in the day, only about 5 from my year of 40 pupils went to Uni - none to Oxbridge, which was reserved for brilliant kids from public schools, kids with rich foreign parents or royals. Perhaps we should return to that.
