The last 5 years this has changed, football clubs are wealthier than they have ever been due to TV rights and global audiences being opened up.
Big clubs are actually arguably really quite investable, Nick Train who is a fairly well known fund manager holds Celtic and Manchester United in his portfolios.
He makes a very interesting point that if Man Utd were able to offer direct access to their games online at £1 a game, their huge global fan base could theoretically generate hundreds of millions in revenue EVERY game.
Add in the trophy asset nature of owning a big club and they make an interesting investment case - albeit with the caveat to diversify your investment portfolios!
