I struggle a bit with the concept of football clubs from a shareholder perspective

They seem to go against the fundamental corporate principle of acting in the interests of shareholders.

I can see how it might be worth making a quick buck on a club that looks undervalued as a high risk high reward stock, but as a long term bet, they have to be quite a poor investment?
