Of course they can do what they want, i'm mrely outlining way that extra money could be put into the club and its better than them selling because that money actually goes to the club itself and not into the pockets of Delia and MWJ who, it appears based on her recent interviews, intend to give all their money away to charity when they pass away as they have no children.
So they could keep a major stake in the club, become life presidents or something but facilitate a change of control that sees equity invested into the club. I would see that as more aligned with their documented past statements about not being in it for the money than them selling their interest in the club for £100m when they got it for less than a 10th of that.
I don't know precisely how he did it but the Palace chairman brought in new investors to give them extra capital as he realised he did not have the resources to be competitive. He's retained about 18% although not sure how all the different stakes work there.
