I did that once

with a wallet though, not a laptop. Put it on top of the Land Rover in a service station car park because I had my arms full of small children (my own for the avoidance if doubt). By the time I’d stashed them in their car seats and wiped the snot/lunch off their faces I’d forgotten all about it a driv off. Since it had £100 in it and this was somewhere in the north on the way to Scotland obviously some cheery lad in a flat cap rode a whippet along the M6 to catch up and restore it to me (did they f**k, first thing I know is Amex ringing me to alert me to suspicious activity on my card, never saw any of it again).
