If we'd waited til Sunday to tell him, he'd've had no chance to say goodbye to the players

That's the bit a lot of people have missed here. It's because we DO have class and empathy that we HAD to tell him when we did.

Sunday morning, many players were off to their various national teams. Had we told him in their absence, then you'd have had huge damage to morale, complete shock, and all the rest of it.
