There has been a little mention of it yes plus also the fact that many italian

families live with several generations in the same household.

I think there is a much stronger culture of that in Italy and Spain than there perhaps is in the UK. The upshot being that maybe more elderly people got infected in the earlier (i.e. pre-lockdown) stages of the epidemic because a lot live with their grand children etc.

I have no idea if that is borne out by the evidence but there is some logic too it. Also apparently Italy, partly due to aging population and people living longer, generally has a high number of respiratory related deaths in comparison to some other countries.
