You've eloquently summed up the sitcom I'm currently writing.
Vladimir Yashin lives in a dismal high-rise flat in St. Petersburg. Throughout the 80s he dreamed of the fall of Communism. Then the Revolution of '89 came, and he welcomed Western capitalism.
However, he found that McDonald's, Robbie Williams albums and Vernon Kaye depressed him even more than the Stalinist purges, and he fell into a deep pit of despair. Actually he commits suicide at the end shortly after turning on the TV, only to find that the only thing on is John Inman screaming "I'm free" in a tired, lazy, thumpingly unamusing manner every 30 seconds.
Sounds hilarious, eh?
