I personally don’t believe he intended it as racist, however...

He is an experienced broadcaster and football fan who grew up in an era when monkey chanting in games was commonplace, so the connotations should have occurred to him before posting. It was the non-apology apology that irritate me, the “it’s not me it’s everyone else’s fault but my own and it’s the people who identify the racist connotations who are the true racists, and I’m the victim in all of this etc” that was most disappointing.

His “satire on the posh media circus” excuse was plausible, his “I didn’t even know the baby was black” excuse less so. I’d sooner give him the benefit of the doubt over his intentions but he’d not helped himself after the error and he’s brought a lot of that criticism on himself.
