Horses for courses. I think McLean offers a great compromise between

two defensive midfielders and being a bit looser with only one defensive midfielder in away games. He is better defensively than Vrancic or Leitner and offers more creativity going forward than Tettey.

If we are playing at home, and they’ve both been back enough to be match fit and low risk of reinjury then I think we would see Vrancic or Leitner together with trybull. Vrancic is the more expansive of the two in his creativity if we are looking to break quickly. Leitner is the better of the two if our game plan involves patient possession.

I do wonder what will happen now if trybull is injured or needs a break. Would we bring back tettey or use McLean in that role with Vrancic or Leitner? The other question is whether any of the three we are discussing can be as or more effective than Stiepermann in the 10 role. So far I haven’t been convinced that they would be effective there.
