It's a hangover from the days when every film had a strong male lead and a pretty girl

Obviously it's much more developed than that now, though probably not in any sense equal; but I agree with you that it makes no sense to have categories split by gender - though GOBB also has a point that once you remove the gender divide it becomes political if there are three or four winners of one gender in a row. On balance though I'd agree with you that they should just call it "best actor" on the understanding that actors like doctors can be of any gender.
