Why do they have best actors and actresses?

Am I alone in thinking that is just wrong and archaic? The gender bit not the best bit. I get the differential in physical activity but acting, really? How the f**k is that sitting well with anyone these days? Anyway, well done Olivia Colman. Nice name as well.
