Don't prune it now!!!

It'll bleed sap massively. Wait till October or November, it'll be dormant then

To be honest birches don't really like heavy pruning. You can take off lower shoots to show off the trunk (that's really the point of a silver birch) but shortening it will make an ugly tree I'm afraid.
