it's not about whether or not they have the wherewithal to go it alone

of course they do, they have more economic potential than the likes of Cyprus, Iceland, Kosovo, and a whole host of other independent countries. Particularly if they did cut a deal with the EU on either membership or single market access.

The question is whether the Scots are willing to accept the cuts to their standards of living that would be the price of that freedom.
