Could they not just be independent of the UK and the EU?

Isn't that what a "Nationalist" party would be after? Not interested in the ethics or personalities of it I couldn't give two tuppenny f**ks, but do the Scots have the wherewithal to go it alone and be their own sovereign nation not beholden to Westminster or Brussels? Are there any examples of nations that have done this without any real oppression?
