...do 3k's and do it quicker than you normally run for the 5k.
Then go out and do 6-7k at your normal pace (slower if you need to)
Keep it changing and you'll see your distance increase and your times get quicker.
Also, get yourself to Parkrun on a saturday morning, the buzz of running in a race (it's free, just need to sign up online) will make it more enjoyable.
I did all these things and ran a lot for about a year, i went from nothing to a half marathon and i really started enjoyed running. I ran when on holiday in France and in Italy, i even ran in Kilmarnock one morning when i went to Scotland for my uncles funeral.
However, my running partner broke his ankle in a pot hole when we were out running one day and i started to make excuses. I've been out about 6 times in the last year. I really should get back on it.
