signed back in summer 2004, going into the prem. He had had agreat season for Colchester and I am in no doubt that we could have got him then for around ?600k. We didn't need Helveg - a young Halford and an old Edworthy could have done the RB last season, with Halford gaining experience along the way. (Eddy did most of it as it is, and was only dropped because of a contract dispute).
I thought going into the prem, we could have brough 3 or 4 highly rated youngsters (Davenport included, when he was at Coventry)- ok, so the prem could have been too early for them and we might have been relegated earlier than we were, but at least it would have been invaluable experience for them, and more importantly, bolstered our squad with players for the long-term and given us a BETTER chance of getting promoted this season.
Instead, we ended up with Helveg, Jonson, Stuart and Bentley, all who went as soon as we were relegated. They were simply brought for the short-term and their wages were effectively flushed down the pan.
