The most revealing thing to me of late

was when he said that, as a player, he always felt it was up to him what happened. That he never left the pitch thinking 'the manager made me play well'.

Well, my recollection of early AN was how he would make the point about meticulous preparation and leaving nothing to chance.

To me, that felt like a bit of an emotional slump from him.
