I'm sure I remember a time when the anthem would have been played before a football match and the players would have stood looking solemn, not singing, or indeed at a medal ceremony at the Olympics and the athletes would have stood being proud but not singing. Nobody ever commented.

At some point some f**ker started singing it and it became a competition.
