In my opinion, training should always involve a ball...

How often during a football match does someone run forward without a ball at their feet, more often than not they are in possession of the football. Running for hours on end will result in great fitness levels and brilliant efficiency.....at running for hours on end.

Similarly, running without a ball in training will create great advances in............running without the ball.

In general, to make trainin as specific to the sport as possible, it must surely involve a football, intermittent sprinting with a ball at the feet. None of this cross country bollocks, running up mousehold s**te and run til you drop rubbish is going to help your players in any way.
