Well a couple of comments

Although our midfied contains three players who I believe are better than any of the midfielders in 98: the more experienced Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard, in 1998 we had Paul Ince and Rob Lee (and even the dinosaur Batty).

Now they may all have been of far less quality but they were DEFENSIVE midfielders. We don't have any now!

I disagree about Shearer - I think Rooney can do that job, but yes we've missed him for a few years.
