If he's coveting one of the top jobs, they will want to know how he can handle that side of life, which he may never really get to show here. With Villa he gets the experience of the media spotlight, player egos and bigger wage structures that will let him show he can handle a bigger job.

It may backfire, but he probably thinks that he needs to enhance that side of his CV. footballing wise he could probably have achieved a similar permiership performance (safe mid table) with us but there would always have been the question mark over whether he could handle the different pressures of a bigger club.
