two ways to view that

(1) Thaxton deserves to be given more of a chance than that, at the end of a great career;

or:

(2) Thaxton deserves protection from a proper beating, and permanent damage, at the end of a great career, in a fight he was never gonna win.

Not sure, but think I tend towards the latter.
