it's not spam though.

people are quite frequently putting out messages about things they're looking for - inviting replies, or trying to find out who else is looking at say a particular type of software. Gives a quick community build, a chance to monitor what your competitors are saying and so on.

For example this morning I got sent a spreadsheet for everyone who's interested in a particular trend with their twitter ids so that you can look for quick updates. Saves reading through lengthy blogs.

Also proven its worth in the breaking news arena.

I tend to think if people like Andrew McAfee are twittering it's worthwhile. I'm crap at the twittering but interested in what else is happening.
