At least that's something thoughtful for New Year's Day

I find myself in a quandary. I really don't like the knee-jerk reaction of calling for the manager's head every time we have a bad spell, but, I think that the position we are in now owes a lot to Roeder's arrogance and in some cases incompetence, and I believe he's got to go.

I could put up with poor form and some managerial errors ; everyone makes mistakes and when you're living in a goldfish bowl as football managers do, it's inevitable that things will be magnified and bones will be picked over ad nauseum.

What I can't put up with is Roeder's arrogance and his view that only he knows what's beat. No manager is going to take advice from fans, but there could be much more of a feeling of bonding and togetherness. Roeder's approach simply leads to a massive gulf between him and the fans and it's beginning to be paralysing.

For example most people are baffled by his insistence on playing Bell on the left when he would certainly be much more comfortable on the right. With Croft playing well it's obvious that Bell can't replace him, but when, as at Palace, Croft was unavailable he still plays Bell on the left and for a time, the very left footed Pattison was on the right. All he needs to do is to explain his thinking but, instead of that, he treats any questioner to his treatise that "they've never run a football club". This is very alienating and it doesn't take too much thought to imagine what he's like if a player comes up with some ideas - which I as a manager would always encourage my staff to do.

I fear we are now on a very downward path and can't see any light at all at the end of the tunnel, which is why we need another throw of the dice. There are clearly financial difficulties - but relegation the the Third Division would certainly not cure them and that's where I believe Roeder is leading us.
